GRC! The Series!

Storing this here for posterity and brainstorming. -W

Thinking about how so many anime were inspired by Evangelion, and needing something to draw last night, I came up with the idea of turning the title of this site into a manga series: the Giant Robot Club.

Sometime in the near future, a border dispute between India and China escalated into a full-scale war, bringing the US and several other countries into the fray.  Among the advanced tech used in this conflict were the Deva, giant robots developed by the Indian army that were powered by synching up with a pilot’s chakras (an idea Warren and I were throwing around some six years ago).

The story begins eight years after China officially won the war.  India is an occupied territory, the Japanese island of Kyushu has been completely destroyed, and the United States is in a state of total economic dependence.  In the Pacific Northwest, the area of US territory that was most badly damaged by US involvement in the Second Pacific War, three friends discover a discarded Deva mech and attempt to salvage it.

Each of the three members of  the “Giant Robot Club” has different plans and motivations regarding the found technology.  Brian, an engineer and amateur historian, wishes to repair the Deva for its scientific and historical significance.  Eli, a skilled martial artist and self-important idealist, plans on using the technology to aid their fellow Northwesterners, many of whom have become homeless or have turned to crime.   Choi, an immigrant from Korea after the destruction of his birthplace and a devout Christian, is the most hesitant member of the group and wants to hand their find over to the US Government before the group allows him to be the mech’s pilot.

In addition to the Deva, a 35-foot-tall mech called Nixon, the group also acquires some high-tech chakra weapons:  Eli uses a pair of gauntlets that increase the power behind his punches called the Manipura Gloves; Brian has the Anja gun; and Choi uses the Swadhisthana energy sword.

Anyone have any ideas for this concept or want to do something with it?  The characters have obvious roots in three real members of this site, but I don’t want to be too tied down to real people at the cost of creating a cool story (for example, I was thinking of having Choi grow into his role as the real hero in the story and Eli becoming envious and growing into more of a rival/antagonist).  I’m thinking we could turn this into a work-in-progress, maybe develop it some more or add some other characters, like a Miles or a Geoff or whoever?
