Some Asshole Challenges Evolutionary Status Quo

Late Nights, Long Nights – The First Fifteen (Hours)

EDIT: Removed second ZIP, had forgotten how screwed up the files inside were.

Some of my favorite chill/downtempo tracks with just enough beat to keep you awake and on the ball.

This comes from a compilation album called The Essential Chill Collection. This is a great assortment of some really good tracks from some names you already know, and a bunch of people you’ve probably never even heard of. If nothing else, this was THE item that allowed me to branch out into the world of downtempo and pick artists I really wanted to follow. Hopefully it will do the same for you…

Stay tuned for more updates and more music.

Admiral Ackbar Voted Ole Miss Mascot?

February 24th, 2010 Warren 1 comment

Ole Miss students are set to vote to replace their current mascot with admiral Ackbar from star wars.

I am totally in favor of this.

Ackbar!

Nerds & College Sports To Collide!: Will the University of Mississippi Rebels (Ole Miss) finally get the leader of the “Star Wars” Rebel Alliance as their mascot? TMZ reported that the university has voted to replace their old mascot – Colonel Reb. And the galaxy’s most famous Mon Calamari, Admiral Ackbar, is the favorite choice among students. The final decision is reportedly up to the Ole Miss’ student mascot committee. No word if George Lucas would allow the university the right to use his character as their mascot – or if Jar Jar Binks is jealous.

Religion Rant

November 1st, 2009 Warren 18 comments

This is my rant, taken from the comments on Alan’s post and made into a new topic per Sean’s request so it can be discussed:

My biggest issue with the Bible (and I suppose any religious text not already a flash animation) is what Sean points out, which is that there are so many versions and revisions and edits of the source text, that most people only know or recognize a single version of the story. Sean can attest that the differences between the King James and New International Version are already substantial, and that when you compare protestant, lutheran, catholic, and orthodox versions you are almost reading totally different stories.
I suppose it’s 1% source and 99% interpretation; that you could summarize the bible on a flash card and hand it out and still have the same damn arguments about who killed who and what day noah started eyeing the sheep. Some sects of christianity (and judaism, to be fair) exist just because of reformists or dark horses like Martin Luther. Luther didn’t want people to follow him, he just wanted the church reformed and cleaned up. I’m not well-read on what happened between nailing the theses to the door and the establishment of the protestants and lutherans, so I can’t really speak for that time- but aren’t all the new sects eroding the chance for the group as a whole to come together again? What chance is there for the Catholics and Protestants to come to the table and work together as brothers under Christ? Will there always be tension and disagreement until every person is their own personalized sect of christianity? When do they start shooting at each other?
In my mind the next logical step is radicalized christianity, where you wind up with a sort of crusade against ‘everybody else’ who isn’t on the exact same goddamn page with you. When does a radical sect become radicalized- like Islam? Didn’t that whole interpretation of the Q’oran(sp?) come out of the crusade times, that Qoranic scholars took the passage about Jihad or ‘taking up swords to guard muslim brothers’ as legitimizing a holy war against any threat to the muslim world?
How does a religious sect get to where they are totally unwilling (maybe militantly so) to hear other versions of their holy text, or others who don’t really agree on all the talking points, or when their whole existence comes down to interpreting hash marks on a 3000 year old stone cube the deposed king used to use as a doorstop?

Grim Reaper’s Calendar, July 1st : Mollie Sugden

July 1st, 2009 Warren No comments

Well, if you ever watched OPB in the early or mid 90′s, chances are you watched for the British funny- Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, Keeping Up Appearances, and of course Are You Being Served.

For those who don’t recall, AYBS followed the strange times at the Grace Brothers department store. The cast of characters was colorful, the situations hilarious, and the writing razor-sharp.

Despite being made in the very early 70′s, the show was extremely edgy and just balls-to-the wall funny. No subject was too taboo- the show even had an ‘obviously’ gay character as a lead.

I loved the show, and it definitely ranks as one of Britain’s best exports of the 20th century.

So it’s with sadness that I write about the death of one of the principal cast- Mollie Sugden, who played the right-honorable Mrs. Peacock. She played her part with a certain obliviousness that worked really well against the rest of the characters. Like Margaret Dumont against the Marx Brothers, she rarely got to make the jokes, but provided the canvas for others to paint the funny.

BBC has the whole story HERE.

I know I’m being overly poetic here, but I’m getting really bummed out by all the death and mayhem.
