MILES’ EDIT: I’m having a much better day today. Thanks for the words of support. I won’t be telling anyone off or heading directly to the unemployment line, but I think it’s time I start putting my resume out to see if there are any takers.
I wouldn’t have stuck with things this long if I didn’t think that I was right, and everyone else was totally wrong. I guess maybe spite is reason enough to see me through the next few months?
The Futurama season finale is tonight. I still haven’t gotten around to reviewing last week’s episode, so expect a two episode review and maybe something special in the near future.
END EDIT
I had a really, really, REALLY shitty day at work. I figured that I’d post here as a way of venting off some pretty unhealthy frustration.
Yeah, yeah, I’m sure Warren already saw this a few hours before I did.
I always found the Modern Pentathlon to be the oddest collection of sports; running, swimming, horseback riding, fencing, and shooting. It’s the kind of thing where skill in one particular event seems to have very little bearing on the others. I guess you could argue that running and swimming both require similar muscles. And maybe you could even argue that the endurance required for swimming and running can help in fencing, but frankly I think that’s pushing things a little far. You quite literally need to be a master of 5 unique disciplines to excel.
It’s a bit strange to call it a “Modern” Pentathalon when it seems the last time these collective skills were all equally useful was around the Musketeer time.
I think the comments are the most interesting part of this article. You’ve got the entire gamut from joke posts to genuine discussion about the impacts of lasers on the sport.
Miles’ Edit: I looked at some of the times for the 3km run, and most of the runners were in the 10:20-9:40 time range. My best time in high school was 9:57, so this is probably the only case where my own athleticism rivals an Olympic athletes. Whaddaya say Geoff, wanna get some airsoft pistols and boffing sticks and make a go at the Modern Pentathalon?
I’m honestly sorry for the short notice. I feel like I owe Geoff a special apology for coordinating the session. I also feel like I owe Sean a special apology for basically saying “you’re on your own for a ride.”
Today has not been a good day at work (which is a shame because it is my 5 year anniversary and I should be in a better mood).
I may not always be punctual about these reviews, but I’ll post them anyway. Here are my reviews for That Darn Katz! and A Clockwork Origin. Read more…
I seem to recall last weekend the idea that we would have a game on Sunday the 15th, and also do book club. I hadn’t heard anything different, so I assume that’s still on?
But Sean and Kyla are also hosting a shindig in Eugene at the river on Sunday.
I’m not suggesting we try and shoehorn the two activities into a single activity. I’d like to do both. I want to “roll them bones” and play another session of Geoff’s game. On the other hand, it’s going to be a hot weekend, and the idea of a party at the river sounds like a paradise to me. Seriously, I worked way to many damn weekends on this experiment, and I can’t helb but think I’ve let the summer pass me by.
I think we’d probably have more fun if we all did the same thing, rather than splitting off into two groups, with some of us missing book club/game.
My vote is for Eugen and the river. What about you guys?
Sure, I could fall be posting about legitimate things, like my plans for the next 5-10 years. But fuck that! This movie exists and needs to be taken down a fucking peg or two.
I think the best way to watch this trailer was summed up in a review of Meet the Spartans (it was either on the Onion AV Club or Pajiba). At every single moment that is supposed to make you laugh and doesn’t please apply the following logic: “that’s not a joke! that isn’t even a thought!”
I am going to give you a real time review of why this trailer/movie is a work of comic genius. Buckle your fucking seat belts, this is going to be a bumpy ride.
000-0:20: Just a few words and some trees. We just might get through this unscathed.
0:27: Her head is a cheeseburger. Cuz vampire’s drink blood. So it’s funny!
0:32: Holy shit! She just hit a wall. Hysterical!
0:36: 20th Century Fox and Regency don’t make no shit, I tell you what.
0:44: I totally get it! People order Chinese food. That’s something people do! Pure comedy gold.
0:49: Yay! Alice from Alice in Wonderland is in it for who knows why?
0:53: Ha ha! Gun violence!
0:59: The Jersey Shore is a thing! It’s so comical that they have a show called the Jersey Shore, and yet its cast are appearing in this movie, which is not the Jersey Shore. Ha!
1:03: …yeah…
1:08: Lady Gaga…I guess the joke is they’re referencing Lady Gaga…
1:11: Guy from Community/Knocked Up/The Hangover, what are you doing? I thought you had standards.
1:15: Gay werewolves, or are they perhaps Werebears?
1:21: He hit him with a baseball bat! Funny. Definitely funny!
1:29: Wow. They actually came up with an honest-to-goodness joke? Golf clap.
1:38: I also would confuse them with The Black Eyed Peas because of how much they look nothing like The Black Eyed Peas. Is it 2000-and-8? ‘Cuz that joke was 2000-and-late.
1:43: A chihuaha joke…. bet they wished they could have used that back in 1999 when the taco bell dog was still on the air.
1:48: Vampires suck. It’s funny because they suck blood, but this movie is implying that they also suck in the sense that they are uncool and/or lame. Such an incredible title. What genius came up with that one?
1:53: Shovel to the face! I’d do a joke about how team Edward/Jacob are more visible than any women’s athletic team, but that might be in poor taste. So make your own joke Mad-Libs style!
1:57: Holy hell it’s finally over. What a pile of ass!
I’m a week behind in my Futurama recaps, and since Warren has already seen these episodes there really isn’t any damn point in posting my views. (Just kidding, and since when has you guys already having heard/seen something prevent me from repeating it ad nauseum?)
Here are your reviews for Lethal Inspection and The Late Philip J. Fry. Read more…

I think my taste in music has finally gone off the deep end. As far as I can tell, The Pepper Pots, are a Spanish(?) band who sound like something out of the 1950s.
Granted, I’m sort of hard-wired to immediately like anything put out by Megalith records (I’ll let you guys do the detective work to figure out why), and I’d seen the familiar rocket ship cover art for the album Shake It! and thought it looked cool, but never bothered to check it out. I can’t imagine why not given the obvious Iron Man reference.
Then some Pepper Pots came up on my Pandora playlist. At first I thought it was a track by The Selecter or some sort of Pauline Black solo project. I’ve been hooked since about 2pm this afternoon. We have to go see them if they ever come to Oregon.
Last nights Futurama was AWESOME! It was the perfect mix of adventure, science fiction, and comedy. Last night’s episode silenced all of the haters who claim the new Futurama isn’t as good as the older episodes (I guess that’s…me?). It was a very satisfying half hour of TV, and if you didn’t watch this particular episode, I suggest you try to catch the rerun or watch it online.
The Red Elvises are coming through Eugene again. They will be playing Tuesday, July 20th, at John Henry’s Bar.
It sounds like it will be a good time, considering how much fun I had with Jared, Sean, and Alan last time. Please send me a reply if you want to go to the show. I really want to go, but also don’t want to go by myself.
Okay, something is missing. How is it I can go on for nearly 1000 words about a half hour of Futurama, but we haven’t had any lengthy posts with photos from the 2 months that Alan has been back in Korea?
Alan!!! How are you? What have you been up to? How are the kids? How’s the weather? How badly do you miss cheeseburgers?
I’m a week behind on my Futurama recap/synopsis/reveiws, so you get two episodes crammed into this post.
I am determined to provide all the Futurama information needed for aall veiweres of the site who aren’t actively watching the show; which is admittedly a small population, most likely consisting of Julia and Alan.
The first episode up for reveiw (2 weeks ago) is already an instant classic.
Check out Spoony’s review series for the Ultima games. He’s only done the first game (plus the precursor Akalabeth), but this is shaping up to be a good review series. The Akalabeth review isn’t as good, but still fun to watch if you have the time. But man oh man! The plot to the first Ultima game is FUCKED UP! Watch the reveiw to see why!
I have been sick. Very sick. I went to the ER yesterday because between the hours of 5am and noon, I probably vomited 30 times. They gave me an IV and sent me off with a combination of Maalox, Pepcid AC, and Anti-nausea medication.
I haven’t vomited since the ER visit, but I still have stomach pains, and my throat is pretty sore from all the vomiting. The last “full meal” I had was on Wednesday, and my sleep patterns have been pretty irregular.
Fortunately, I’ve had Quinn there to take great care of me. Unfortunately, I’m still somehow expected to show up on Saturday and Sunday for the sake of my experiment.
So, unfortunately, this means that I won’t be competing in the Sauvie’s Island Half Marathon. Geoff, if you’re reading this here first, I’m sorry for the short notice. I really don’t see how I could go from an ER visit to running a decent half marathon in 2 days.
It’s pretty much safe to assume that I never don’t want to talk about Futurama. I love Futurama, and this Thursday’s premiere event has given me reason to talk about it at length.
In many ways, Futurama is my Star Wars/Star Trek–that particular bit of sci-fi that inspires rabid fandom. This puts it an elite pantheon of my geekery, alongside Evangelion, Final Fantasy VII, The Wheel of Time, and others. I would go so far as to say it Futurama was the BEST show of last decade, and perhaps my favorite animated show of all time (though there are others vying for that honor).
I’d hate to “hihjack” Geoff’s first game session, but is there ANY way we can hold the session in Albany?
I have to work both Saturday and Sunday, and have to be at work on Monday as well. I can definitely pick up Sean, but it would be a lot easier for me to have the first session in the Albany/Corvallis area.
It’s this damn experiment. It needs so much attention. During the whole month of June, it’s going to be pretty difficult to leave the Albany/Corvallis area. This should clear up once July roles around.
Once again, I hate to ask for this favor (and hate that I didn’t give you a more advanced warning), but it would really help me out if the game weren’t in Tualatin.
I can try to sweeten the pot by offering to purchase the group snacks.
Now that we have Geoff’s game page up, how do I add a post and make it specific to that page? I only know how to add posts that are visible on the main page.
I think it would be easier to read as a series of posts with individual comments attached, rather than as a cascading series of comments.
