First thoughts about the game:
This is just from my own perspective and I realize that how a person relates to a game is very personal and subjective so keep that in mind.
I kind of hate my character. He sounds like a douche. I wish he didn’t speak. It’s actually really pissing me off, cause I named him the same name as my main character from WoW. I even gave him green skin like an orc. But he sounds like fucking Mit Romney and I really regret naming him what I did. I might not make him my main.
No auto attack is kind of bugging me too, I wish I could just tell my character to start whacking at a guy and don’t stop until he’s dead. Instead it’s more like diablo where you have to keep clicking and clicking and clicking until the monster dies.
Having a companion follow you around might turn out okay. But it seems like I’m being forced to play a pet class, like a hunter or warlock in WoW. That’s not bad or anything, but whatever.
There’s a lot of new stuff to learn about the mechanics of the game. This has the unfortunate effect of making me long for WoW, because I’ve already mastered those mechanics. I don’t want to have to relearn all this shit about crafting and auctioning and modding weapons and downloading addons and shit. I’m already really good at it, just not for SWTOR. I might get through this phase though, cause I’m definitely going to stick with it for a while, and maybe it’ll just be absorbed painlessly.
As a side note, I played the first 3 levels of a trooper (about 10 minutes worth) and I liked it a lot better. Shooting people is more fun I think, and the guy’s voice is actually pretty good. I made him a really short skinny guy (body type 1) and really got a kick out of this 5’2 dude going around with a big gun and speaking in a deep voice about body bags and shit. I wanted to name him Vorkosigan after my favorite sci-fi character from a series of books I like, but the name was taken. If it hadn’t been I’d probably be playing him right now.
Haven’t seen you on in a few days. Did you make a new character? or just been busy? Alan was curious too.
I want to rename my character, Just a little bit. I didn’t know about legacy names(surnames).
You can delete and make a new char with the same name. Now is the time to do it since you haven’t gotten very far. I did wish they let you hear the voice before finish character creation. Speaking of character creation. It SUCKS.
I’m glad that you’re going to spend time in this game. I am not sure, but are the species voices the same for each class? so a human consular is the same as a twi’lek consular, etc?
I checked, the voices are the same.
Storwiki has info on voice actors cuz lots are famous or popular voice actors. Also the companion thing is nice. I really don’t treat it as a pet- it does whatever it’s default is set on and I leave it alone. Currently mine is single mob tanking but in a group he can switch to match my range dps. If he dies he dies.
The crafting mechanic is a lot like star treks new duty officer system which in turn is like FarmVille. Or those other time based mini games. Send them on a mission and just wait till they’re done. I like it. I can log off and still be doing something. The only thing is so far they are not long (sto had 20hr-2day doff missions lol) also they have an investment cost including for gathering and they can still fail (tho skill still grows).
In a related note I am not sure how money works in this game bc I’m level 11 have adv job and first companion pretty much out the tutorial phase and only vendored about 7k.
I’d say the best part of playing is that it’s with u guys. Without u guys it’d be a new mechanic to learn and the desire to do so would wane. The all voice game mechanic is cool and novel but tiring at times or just poorly done. But it comes with many good scenes so just gotta take it.
This is an interesting and exciting game to play with u all and at the least it is very polished and we are going thru the games growing stages as we play. I like that bc it’s better than joining and established game. I’m definitely a fan of early adoption if we’re gonna do it anyway.
I think coming from STO and how that game plays made adapting to stor much better than coming from wow. It was easier to adapt out of my comfort setting (even tho I completely remapped to sto keybinds lol) it plays a lot like sto in my interaction with combat. It’s definitely a star wars game. More cinematic and feels like a movie that I get to play a character in.
I agree with Alan, that having everyone playing a game together really increase the amount of fun I’m having, even if that means playing with Kai! OWE.
I understand where Geoff is coming from. I’d like to think I’m really awesome at STO. I got really good gear, got my skills figured out(had, they changed the trees). But these games to me are different enough where being weak and ignorant in SWTOR doesn’t make me want to play STO. SWTOR is much more like Aion + WOW + KOTOR. I never got to endgame in Aion or WoW, so getting to endgame in this is kind of a big goal for me. And doing endgame stuff seems even more important since we can group up together now.
As DPS and always having played DPS(WOW, Aion, STO) I haven’t noticed the lack of auto attack to be much of a problem, I seem to remember always having to mash number keys for attack skills. I guess being a healer most of your skills you’re casting or healz so not having any auto attack would be a problem. Hmm..
One thing about coming from STO is that I’m used to the companions. In STO you have an away team, 4 companions with you. You have very little control over them, so it’s nice in SWTOR having one with a lot more control over. But it still sucks that there are no rules you can setup. In Dragon Age you could setup instructions for your party on what they should do in certain circumstances. I’d really love to have that here. I’d very much love to have my companion attack what I’m attacking instead of what I’m not.
I’m disappointed in the classes for SWTOR. 4 Jedi/Sith classes? Really? Seems rather redundant…Also the fact that as a Knight, you have basically no cool force powers, like Throw or Grab. I loved The Force Unleashed because you could do it all, Lightsaber, Force powers – everything. I rolled a consular, and she seemed pretty powerful, but the combat seemed a lot slower; as I had to wait more for cool downs.
The character creation is shit coming from both STO and Aion where you could edit each body part – arm length, arm bulk, or nose height etc etc. This is like old school games where it’s just “here are 4 faces, have fun”. Oh, gee…..that’s…awesome……plus each class can only choose one of four species? This game likes fours a lot. Wait..fours…force……..seriously? sigh…….And why is the Bounty Hunter Empire only? Don’t they have bounties in the Republic? I guess it’s too close to the Trooper though….just seems silly though. The BH and Smuggler should be cross faction….
Alan, money just seems to come from selling to the vendor. Everything on the Galactic Market sells really cheap. so it’s nice to buy from, but not to sell on. My bank balance is like a Mountain range. I get a lot, and then I have to spend it ALL on skills. The Speeder skills are 40k and 210k. Probably a third one at 50. That is not to mention you have to then buy a speeder, at least the first one is only 8k. Also once you get your spaceship, do space missions daily. They seem to pay pretty well, and have ridiculous amounts of exp. You’ll need the basic starship upgrades. And with just the basic stuff they are so easy. They do get tougher later, when you unlock harder ones.
I really started to ramble so i’m done.
I rolled a new character called Jormund, he’s a guardian.
